Neuroscience Internal Brigham Study Section (NIBSS)

Thank you for visiting the NIBSS website! We are available to provide members of the BWH Department of Neurology with pre-submission critical review of their research plans for grant applications. The purpose of the service is to make your grants stronger, more competitive, and more likely to be successful.

NIBSS is particularly helpful for residents, graduate students, fellows and early career faculty who are relatively new to the grant writing process, but anyone at Brigham neurology is welcome to submit a grant for review. Research within our department spans from clinical-to-translational-to-basic. To accommodate this variety, we have established two tracks for grant review. Track 1 is aimed at more clinically based research proposals while Track 2 will be more appropriate for proposals of basic research. To learn more of about each tracks, please select the respective button below. For a list of helpful grant writing resources please visit our resources page.

It is important that applicants start this process early in order to get the greatest benefit from NIBSS. Applicants can obtain very early feedback on the premise of their proposal by providing their specific aims page only, or else can provide the entire written application to get feedback on all aspects of the application. For both track 1 and track 2, engaging in this process early is important if appropriate reviewers are to be found. Applicants are reminded to leave plenty of time after the review session to implement feedback.

How do I use this service?

If you are interested in utilizing the NIBSS service please email NIBSS@bwh.harvard.edu with the following information:

  1. Name and degree
  2. Grant mechanism and organization to which you are applying
  3. Due date
  4. Indicate whether you consider your research to be basic, translational or clinical
  5. 1-3 sentences describing the overall goal of the research

Once this information is received, you will be assigned to one of two tracks for review, and additional details outlining the process will be emailed to you.
